Stephen Dorff Calls out ‘Black Widow’ Movie: ‘I’m Embarrassed for Scarlett!’
Marvel has essentially cornered the market for superhero movies. Their business model has not only led to great success for Disney, but it has also changed the film business entirely. Almost every studio is trying to build its own cinematic universe.
However, not everybody is a fan of what Marvel does. We’ve seen big names like Martin Scorsese takes shots at the studio and we can now add Stephen Dorff to the list. The Blade actor hasn’t been in anything notable in some time but wouldn’t even consider joining the cast of a Marvel project. He didn’t mince words when he went after Marvel and Black Widow, which comes out this week.
“I still hunt out the good s**t because I don’t want to be in Black Widow,” Dorff told Independent. “It looks like garbage to me. It looks like a bad video game. I’m embarrassed for those people. I’m embarrassed for Scarlett! I’m sure she got paid five, seven million bucks, but I’m embarrassed for her. I don’t want to be in those movies. I really don’t. I’ll find that kid director that’s gonna be the next Kubrick and I’ll act for him instead.”
Those are some pretty candid words directed at the most powerful movie studio on the planet. It’s admirable that Dorff would take a stand against Marvel but it’s not the best business tactic. Disney is well on its way to controlling much of the film business. It’s clear that Dorff doesn’t care much about that. Many will dismiss him as a C-list actor who is just lashing out at Hollywood because he hasn’t had a big role in years. However, there is merit to what he’s saying.
Hollywood has become dominated by superhero movies, sequels and remakes. That’s unfortunate for people who love great original films. There’s plenty of great original content coming out but it’s mostly existing in the indie world. It’s truly sad that we don’t see a lot of big-budget original films anymore. It will be very difficult to find the next Kubrick in this current climate.
