A New Nintendo Switch Model Has Finally Been Announced

After tons of rumors, reports and near endless waiting, Nintendo has finally announced a new Nintendo Switch model. If you’re expecting some big changes though, you might be a little disappointed.

The Nintendo Switch’s new OLED model features a few improvements from the base model, like a 7-inch screen (the unit’s size is still the same), wider adjustable stand, 64GB internal storage, and enhanced audio. The dock also features a new rounded design and adds a LAN port connection in the back. The dock and included Joy-Con controllers will be available in either the classic red-and-blue colors or the new white color.

The new dock and Joy-Cons will also be compatible with older Switch models. In case you’re looking to pick up the new dock for it’s built-in LAN functionality, Nintendo has stated that it will be available as a standalone product. It will only be available on Nintendo’s online store, meaning you won’t be able to pick it up from another retailer.

While I’m personally a fan of the new look for the accessories, I can’t think a reason to upgrade from the base Switch model. All the rumors and reports over the last few months pointed to a Switch “Pro” model with improved performance and 4K TV output, but the OLED model lacks the two things that would make it a significant upgrade. Even the new Joy-Cons are going to be the same, so we’ll probably still be dealing with the infamous drifting issues the controllers have been plagued with since release.

It’s been four years since the Nintendo Switch first came out, but we’re essentially getting a Switch XL upgrade. If you haven’t gotten your hands on a Nintendo Switch yet, there’s no reason not to go for the OLED model. If you’re still holding on to your base Switch, you might as well hold off on the possibility that Nintendo eventually announces a more powerful model. The news is disappointing but welcome nonetheless.

The Nintendo Switch OLED model will be available on October 8 and cost $350.
