Riot Games is Bringing ‘VALORANT’ to Mobile

Amidst the celebration of VALORANT’S one-year anniversary, Riot Games has announced that the tactical first-person shooter will be making its way to mobile. VALORANT has had an incredibly successful first year, drawing in nearly 14 million players each month and frequently becoming one of the top-watched categories on the livestreaming platform Twitch. It makes perfect sense that Riot’s next step would be to bring the tac-shooter to a wider audience.

In an interview with PolygonVALORANT executive producer Anna Donlon revealed more information about the process of bringing the game to mobile.

“We didn’t start out with ‘We’re making VALORANT on mobile,’ we started out with ‘Can we make VALORANT on mobile?’ with a lot of skepticism. For us, whatever you get out of playing on PC, you should get out of playing VALORANT on mobile. But we have to recognize that the mobile player need is different,” Donlon said.

Donlon further clarified that Riot does not currently intend to include cross-play between the PC and mobile versions of the game. “The same way that we’re not going to deliver a subpar mobile experience for mobile players, we’re not going to compromise the PC experience either.”

Donlon didn’t reveal any information beyond that. How the game will play and when it will be available are still unknown, but Donlon hopes that we’ll be able to learn more by next year.

I was initially skeptical about how Riot would be able to translate the core experience of VALORANT from PC to mobile. The game’s mechanics and the skill expression each agent offers seems like it would prove difficult to bring over to mobile, but Donlon seems confident in the team’s ability to do just that. Riot recently brought it’s flagship game League of Legends to mobile via League of Legends: Wild Rift, and that has seen just as much success on the mobile market.

Until further information is revealed, we’ll have to eagerly wait and see what Riot has planned for VALORANT’S future.
