EA Reportedly Reviving ‘Dead Space’ Under Motive Studios
EA is reportedly looking to bring back an established IP, and it looks like it’s going to be the beloved sci-fi horror series Dead Space.
During the GamesBeat Decides podcast, journalist Jeff Grubb claimed that Motive Studios is working on a dormant EA IP, the identity of which would be revealed during the EA Live Play presentation in July. Shortly after, the story was picked up by VGC and later Gematsu, who confirmed that the revived IP is Dead Space. The new game is supposedly a “reimagining” of the series, rather than a direct sequel to the original games.
Dead Space 3 released back in 2013, but no word had come out about the series in the following years. Many fans believed that EA had quietly cancelled the series, though the company had denied such claims. When EA shut down Visceral Games, the developers of Dead Space, back in 2017, the future of the series had become unknown. Later in 2020, Dead Space co-creator Glen Schofield announced that The Callisto Protocol, a new third-person survival horror-game, was being developed by his new studio, Striking Distance.
While it’s exciting that the Dead Space series might finally return, it might not necessarily be the same as we remembered it. After all, this new entry is supposed to be a “reimagining” of the series by an entirely different team. Fans have been waiting for the next Dead Space for nearly 8 years and it would be a shame if Motive Studios wasn’t able to capture what made the original trilogy so good. Then again, a new direction could give the series the opportunity it needs to spawn another trilogy for the next gen.
Even if Motive isn’t quite able to satisfy fans, the original games still hold up to this day. Plus there’s always The Callisto Protocol to look forward to sometime in 2022.
Until we receive further news, these claims are unfortunately still just rumors. The EA Live Play presentation on July 22 will hopefully confirm further details, but we won’t know if these claims are true until then.
