Exclusive PS5 Purchase Invites Are Being Sent to PS5 Owners

Still struggling to get your hands on the PS5? Sony wants you to know that they’ve got your back–sort of. The company has sent out a new wave of PlayStation Direct invites for customers eager to own the console, yet many of these invites have reportedly been sent to people who’ve already purchased the PS5.

A screenshot featured in a tweet from Wario64 included a timed link to purchase the PS5 through the PlayStation Direct program. The program lets customers shop for the console, accessories and games without needing to refresh another retailer’s website or fear having their order get swiped from them. The problem here, however, is that Wario64 has already owns a PS5.

The PlayStation Direct program is connected through one’s PSN ID, yet the current wave of invites doesn’t seem to recognize who has or hasn’t made the purchase yet. The problem is a little less than ideal, especially when Sony is already struggling to get the PS5 out to as many people as possible. Several other commenters reported similar invites under Wario64’s tweet, showing that it’s not necessarily an isolated incident.

It’s been a struggle for those who’ve had no luck in getting their hands on the system these last few months. From pandemic-related shortages to the scalpers and bots, it has been nearly impossible for many people to find a store carrying the console near them. While the PlayStation Direct program looks promising, the console’s low stock means that a lot of people will have to be waiting a while longer before they get the chance to take the PS5 home.

On the bright side, Sony has discussed plans to accelerate PS5 production during its next fiscal year. Even though its hardware shortages have had a significant impact so far, Sony has been steadily moving forward in its software updates for the next-gen console. The company recently opened up the PS5 system software beta program, granting users the opportunity to try out new features and changes before they are made available to the public.
