Zack Snyder Offers Update on His ‘Seven Samurai’ ‘Star Wars’ Movie

After taking a beating over the last several years, Zack Snyder is back to being a hot property in Hollywood. Critics and fans loved the Snyder Cut of Justice League and Army of the Dead has gotten solid reviews. Prior to taking on a large role in the DCEU in 2013, there was a report Vulture that revealed Snyder was developing a Star Wars movie inspired by Akira Kurosawa’s legendary film Seven Samurai.

It certainly sounded like an interesting project that likely would’ve been the first major Star Wars movie that didn’t focus on the Skywalkers or had little to do with the original trilogy. However, there’s been no update on the project since 2013 until now. Snyder recently appeared on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast and gave the latest insight on the project.

“We talked about it, but it never [happened],” Snyder said. “I’ve been working on it away from the Star Wars universe, on my own, as a sci-fi thing…It’s still a sci-fi thing. It’s the same story. Now, I’m just going to let Star Wars be Star Wars.”

Based on what Snyder is saying, it sounds like a movie is still possible but it won’t be attached to Star Wars. That’s a bit of a disappointment as the Star Wars movies haven’t been great since Disney bought the property. Regardless, Snyder sounds like he hopes to take the idea and make something original with it.

“The 11-year-old me still wants to make that, and now, I know how to,” Snyder said of the potential film. “So, maybe we’ll see that someday.”
