Taika Waititi Sounds off on Developing ‘Star Wars’ Film: ‘It Feels Very Me’

Taika Waititi has gone from being a little-known filmmaker making quirky comedies in New Zealand to Hollywood A-lister in almost no time. He’s now one of the most sought-after talents in the business. Not only is he doing a ton of work behind the camera, but he’s also still popping up in acting roles from time to time.

He’s hard at work on Thor: Love and Thunder but has an even bigger project on the docket. Disney has tapped to write and direct a Star Wars film. Despite having almost no details released on the project, it’s certainly one of the most anticipated projects in development. However, the script is still in its early stages. Waititi recently had a chance to give a bit of an update.

“It’s still in the ‘EXT. SPACE’ stage,” Waititi told Wired. “But we’ve got a story. I’m really excited by it because it feels very me.”

If it “feels” very Waititi, then it’s safe to assume that the film will feature plenty of offbeat comedy. He even had a chance to talk about how his style will mesh with Star Wars.

“I tend to go down that little sincerity alleyway in my films,” Waititi said. “I like to fool the viewer into thinking ‘ha it’s this and then them going, ‘Damn it, you made me feel something!’”

This won’t be Waititi’s first foray into the Star Wars universe. He also directed the season finale of Season 1 of The Mandalorian. Personally, I think that’s the best hour we’ve gotten of Star Wars since Return of the Jedi. It’ll be interesting if he can save Star Wars movies as they’ve been mostly terrible since the 1980s.
