‘Outer Wilds’ Is Set to Receive Surprise DLC This September

Mobius Digital’s 2019 hit Outer Wilds is a game about space exploration and discovery in a solar system that is on the brink of destruction–the system’s sun is only minutes away from going supernova. There is no escaping it, but death is not the end. Every time you die, you wake up at your campsite from the beginning of the game, stuck in a 22-minute time loop that only you’re aware of. Through trial and error, you’ll discover the secrets left behind across the solar system and discover your place in the universe. The game received critical acclaim and won several awards, including game of the year.

Even with how well rounded the main game was, Mobius Digital seems to have more they want to tell. The developer officially announced Echoes of the Eye, an expansion for Outer Wilds, during publisher Annapurna Interactive’s showcase event. The announcement came with a reveal trailer and a September 28 release date.

Mobius Digital hasn’t spoken much about what Echoes of the Eye will be about, and reveal trailer is appropriately cryptic. New Familiar locations throughout Outer Wilds’ solar system are shown orbiting the systems eclipsed sun. While it’s nice to be back, there’s an unshakeable, ominous feeling surrounding this new mystery.

“A strange satellite photo that can’t be explained. A new museum exhibit that marks the trailhead for one last journey into the wilds,” the expansion’s store page reads. “Should you pull at the thread and unravel the solar system’s deepest secret, or is some knowledge better left in the dark?”

It’s clear that Echoes of the Eye will deal with the mystery surrounding the Eye of the Universe, a major plot point and location in the original game. How we’ll go about unraveling the truth behind it, or if we even should, remains a unknown for now. Mobius Digital has assured us that the expansion will “weave directly into the existing world and narrative,” so we can only hope that it’ll further enrich the experience that the original game succeeded at. Outer Wilds has been one of my favorite games in the last few years and I’m incredibly excited to return to it.

Outer Wilds: Echoes of the Eye will release on Steam and the Epic Games Store on September 28, and will be priced at $15.
