‘Elden Ring’ Gets Release Date & Exciting Gameplay Trailer

The agonizing silence has finally been broken. After nearly 2 years without any news, From Software has finally shown off a gameplay trailer for Elden Ring. The trailer debuted during the Summer Games Fest, showing off the next highly-anticipated game from the developer.

On top of that, Elden Ring also received a release date of January 21, 2022. After such a long wait, it’ll only be a little longer until we can finally get our hands on the game.

From what was shown in the trailer, Elden Ring unsurprisingly looks a lot like Dark Souls. Horrifying monsters, ruined landscapes, and fast-paced combat are a few of the staple features in From Software’s “Soulsborne” games, and Elden Ring looks to continue that.

The trailer was jampacked with beautiful scenery, boss battles against towering creatures, dragons, and so much more. The combat looks to carry over the fluidity and depth of its predecessors, and some of the special abilities shown are reminiscent of Dark Souls 3’s weapon arts. The mounted combat is a new addition and it’ll be interesting to see how the extra movement will influence the level design and stages of some larger battles.

One important thing to note was the presence of blue phantoms in the trailer, possibly meaning that Elden Ring will have co-op and PvP aspects. Multiplayer has always been an enjoyable aspect of Dark Souls and it’ll be nice to see its return.

Elden Ring was first shown off at E3 2019 with an incredibly short teaser. Not much else was revealed then, but From Software announced Elden Ring was to be a collaboration between Dark Souls director Hidetaka Miyazaki and George R.R. Martin, author of the A Song of Ice and Fire series. Though not directly told through gameplay, the Dark Souls series has always had a rich and mysterious story to discover, and bringing Martin onboard to help with that seemed promising.

Since the original announcement, however, no other news about the game had been revealed. Aside from leaks back in March 2021, we knew very little of what the game would actually be about. Fan speculation grew wild with many fake trailers and reveals making their way onto the internet. Some even joked that the game would take years for us to hear anything new, a dig at the long stretches of time between the releases of each book in Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series.

Elden Ring’s newest trailer has put skeptics to rest and reignited the hype for the highly-anticipated game. We hope that this isn’t the last we’ll see of the game before it launches in January 2022.
