WB Won’t Release David Ayer Cut of ‘Suicide Squad’, Director Responds

Based on the reviews of “Zack Snyder’s Justice League,” the movie has been a big hit with critics and fans. It didn’t seem like a new cut of the film was possible just a couple of years ago but it finally happened and it was a big success. With the Snyder cut finally out, there’s been renewed interest in David Ayer being able to release his cut of “Suicide Squad.” The 2016 film was critically panned and the fact that the studio butchered Ayer’s original vision is well documented.

Despite the fan interest, WarnerMedia Studios CEO Ann Sarnoff made it clear that there will be no Ayer cut of Suicide Squad.

“We won’t be developing David Ayer’s cut,” Sarnoff told Variety.

She made it very clear that the DC universe is headed in a different direction.

“I appreciate that they love Zack’s work and we are very thankful for his many contributions to DC,” Sarnoff said of the Snyder-verse. “We’re just so happy that he could bring his cut of the ‘Justice League’ to life because that wasn’t in the plan until about a year ago. With that comes the completion of his trilogy. We’re very happy we’ve done this, but we’re very excited about the plans we have for all the multi-dimensional DC characters that are being developed right now.”

A potential Ayer cut was always going to be difficult to pull off. James Gunn of “Guardians of the Galaxy” fame has his own version of “Suicide Squad” coming out this year. Warner Bros. would probably much rather have the focus remain on that film. That’s clearly a dissapointment to Ayer, who has been campainging to release his cut of the movie.
