Disney Writers ‘Livid’ About White Male Leads in ‘Star Wars’ Films: Report
It appears some people who work for Disney weren’t as stoked on “The Mandalorian” finale as many fans were. The decision to insert Luke Skywalker into the episode was widely praised despite the bad CGI. However, some took umbrage with the fact that Luke had to come in and save the day.
According to a rumor from Pirates & Princesses, a number of writers from Lucasfilm and Disney did not like the fact that a “white male” came and saved the day:
Behind the scenes, large swaths of Kathleen Kennedy loyalists are messaging back and forth about their disdain for Luke Skywalker – a Caucasian male – being brought back in any valiant form. In fact, I’m even told that individuals at Lucasfilm have been reading articles here on Pirates and Princesses, as well as watching videos on Clownfish TV, and are now actively planning on how they can roadblock the retcon attempts of Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau to make Luke Skywalker a hero once more. The Hidalgos of Lucasfilm are not about to let Star Wars go back to what it once was.
What’s baffling about these rumors the fact that people are upset that the show portrayed Luke as a hero. Was he ever not portrayed as a hero? Even in the much-maligned “The Last Jedi,” Luke is still very much one of the good guys. It’s worth taking a look at Pirates & Princesses’ report but do take these rumors with a grain of salt as they almost seem too ridiculous to believe.
‘White Male Lead’ Argument Holds No Weight With ‘Star Wars’
Here at Under The Wheels, we actually weren’t fans of the decision to insert Luke into “The Mandalorian” finale. It felt cheap and lazy while taking away from the main characters and story of the show. However, these rumors are ridiculous. Lucasfilm and Kathleen Kennedy have gone out of their way to not put too many white male leads in their movies.
“Rogue One” was led by a woman, Episodes 7-9 were led by a woman and the “The Mandalorian” is led by a Chilean man. The only Disney-produced “Star Wars” movie or show that’s been led by a white man was “Solo.” “Star Wars” has arguably been the most inclusive of all the major franchises out there right now.
