‘Venom 2’ Could Be Delayed Past 2021: Report

Will Venom: Let There Be Carnage ever get released? It probably will at some point but doesn’t look like it will anytime soon. Sony just recently pushed back the release date from September 17, then September 24 and then October 15. For whatever reason, the film keeps getting delayed despite a recent claim from Tom Hardy that the studio is happy with it.

Now, it looks like it will be delayed once again. According to Vulture, we may not see the anticipated sequel until 2022:

According to multiple inside sources, that’s because Sony is planning to delay the release of Venom: Let There Be Carnage until January 21, 2022 — the date currently occupied by the Jared Leto vampire-superhero thriller Morbius — but the studio is waiting to make the announcement until after CinemaCon, the annual extravaganza at which movie-theater-chain executives and owners come to be dazzled by sneak peeks at Hollywood’s impending blockbusters. “They didn’t want to flash to exhibitors that they’re scared of the early fall,” one person with knowledge of Venom’s release scheme tells me. “Why would you move it three weeks? Buys you nothing.” (Sony declined to comment for this story.)

Before fans of the franchise get too concerned, this might not necessarily mean the film is a disaster. Typically, studios dump off their worst movies in January as it’s considered the worst month to release a film. However, there is also very limited competition that month. With the pandemic back on the rise and talks of theaters requiring proof of vaccination to attend movies, it’s possible that Sony will take a gamble that things will be better in January. This could also mean that the Venom sequel is a giant pile of crap that Sony is embarrassed by. The first one wasn’t exactly beloved by critics. That said, it’s strange times right now so who knows what studios are doing to get back in the green?
