Nintendo Drops Surprise Trailer for New ‘Metroid’ Game

Nintendo typically likes to do things at its own pace so nobody really knew what to expect from its 2021 E3 presentation. They dropped a bombshell by offering a release window for the Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild sequel and gameplay trailer. Had they just dropped that and a couple of small tidbits, fans would’ve been satisfied.

However, Nintendo also dropped a big surprise. There’s been a new Metroid Prime game in development for years but they had to restart production on it and it remains to be seen when that will come out. In the meantime, fans of the series will be able to play Metroid Dread. Check out the trailer below:

Recent Metroid games have focused on first-person or third-person gameplay. This game is going back to the basics of being a side-scrolling 2D adventure. Considering there hasn’t been a new game in the series for some time, this is exciting news. Sure, fans may be frustrated that Metroid Prime 4 still doesn’t have a release date but Nintendo made it clear that the game is still very much in development at E3.

“Before we show this next trailer, I’d like to say one thing,” Nintendo’s senior managing executive officer Shinya Takahashi said prior to the trailer drop. “We are working hard on the latest game in the Metroid Prime series, Metroid Prime 4, which we previously announced.”

Metroid Dread will be arriving on the Nintendo Switch on October 8th, 2021.
