‘South Park’ Creators Ink Massive New Deal With MTV, 14 New Movies Planned
If you’re a fan of South Park, it’s time to rejoice because the show will seemingly go on for the rest of your life. The show has already aired for 24 seasons, including a movie. What’s crazy is that it’s been run by the same creative duo of Trey Parker and Matt Stone since the beginning. Apparently, those two aren’t sick of making South Park yet as they’ve just made a major commitment to MTV Entertainment Studios.
Stone and Parker have signed a deal that keeps South Park on Comedy Central through 2027, which means it will run for at least a 30th season. In addition to the show, the duo is planning 14 made-for-streaming movies exclusively for Paramount+. Two of the films will be coming out this year. It remains to be seen if these films are closer to South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut or the recent specials they’ve been releasing.
“Matt and Trey are world-class creatives who brilliantly use their outrageous humor to skewer the absurdities of our culture and we are excited to expand and deepen our long relationship with them to help fuel Paramount+ and Comedy Central,” Chris McCarthy, President/CEO -MTV Entertainment & CCO/Adult Animation – Paramount+ in a press release. “Franchising marquee content like South Park and developing new IP with tremendous talent like Matt and Trey, is at the heart of our strategy to continue growing Paramount+.”
“Comedy Central has been our home for 25 years and we’re really happy that they’ve made a commitment to us for the next 75 years,” Parker and Stone said. “When we came to ViacomCBS with a different way to produce the show during the pandemic, Chris (McCarthy), Nina (Diaz), Keyes (Hill-Edgar) and Tanya (Giles) were immediately supportive and enabled us to try something new that turned out to be really well received. We can’t wait to get back to doing traditional South Park episodes but now we can also try out new formats. It’s great to have partners who will always take a chance with us.”
According to Bloomberg, the deal is worth $900 million, which will make Parker and Stone two of the most successful TV show makers ever. Not bad for a couple of weirdos from Colorado.
