Obsidian Announces ‘The Outer Worlds 2’ Is In Development [WATCH]

Critically-acclaimed developer Obsidian Entertainment has officially announced The Outer Worlds 2 for Xbox Series X|S.

The announcement happened during the Xbox and Bethesda Games Showcase as part of E3’s four-day conference, showing off a teaser for the sequel to 2019’s critically-acclaimed sci-fi RPG.

The trailer, however, doesn’t show off much in terms of gameplay. “We begin by hearing an old, wise-sounding voice,” the narrator says as we look out into a peaceful, alien world. Suddenly, the serenity is interrupted as a creature violently stomps into the frame. The narrator notes that this creature won’t be in the final game, so “say goodbye to it forever.” The trailer’s fourth-wall-breaking has a certain charm to it, almost tempering fan excitement by outright stating to not get their hopes up.

In fact, the trailer is making fun of itself for not having much of anything really. The trailer doesn’t feature any gameplay footage, a release date, or anything that you’d hope for in a reveal for a new game. Obsidian’s announcement is, if anything, an official promise that The Outer Worlds 2 will eventually come out.

The Outer Worlds was well-received upon launch, scratching an RPG itch reminiscent of Obsidian’s work on Fallout: New Vegas. Though it seemed like a sequel would naturally arrive after its success, the future of the series became unclear after Microsoft acquired the developer.

While Obsidian said that much of The Outer Worlds 2 is still in early development, they revealed that the game will be launching on the Xbox Games Pass when it eventually releases.
