‘League of Legends’ Newest Champion Snips & Sews Her Way to Victory
Gwen, the Hallowed Seamstress is the newest champion coming to “League of Legends.” A doll brought to life by the dark powers of the Black Mist, Gwen against the forces of evil to protect the world her creator loved. Armed with her scissors, needles and thread, the Hallowed Seamstress will cut her enemies down to size and stitch together a resounding victory for her allies.
Gwen was first revealed last week with a short teaser and gameplay trailer, and now Riot Games has fully revealed her abilities on Tuesday, March 30th. As an Ability Power skirmisher with a high amount of dueling potential, top lane looks to be Gwen’s preferred position.
Her passive deals increased damage against enemies with high health and keeps her in the fight longer by healing herself for a portion of the damage dealt. Her Q ability deals a mix of magic damage and true damage, and the mobility from her E ability and slow from her ultimate ability allows her to stick to anyone fleeing from a fight.
The most important ability in Gwen’s kit looks to be her W, Hallowed Mist. When activated, Gwen creates an area around her that grants armor and magic resistance, all while making her immune to attacks from any champion outside the mist. Anyone who wants to fight against Gwen will have to enter the area, leaving them vulnerable to the Seamstress’s ghastly scissors. Gwen’s Hallowed Mist is a lot like Xin Zhao’s ultimate, Crescent Guard. Both create an area of invulnerability around them that prevents enemy champions outside of it from dealing damage. The main difference is that Gwen’s Hallowed Mist is a basic ability, meaning it’ll have a significantly lower cooldown.
It’ll hard to say whether or not Gwen is too strong of a champion until she gets officially released. Gwen should be hitting “League of Legends” Public Beta Environment sometime in the next few days, where she’ll then hit live servers after two weeks of playtesting. Until her official release, here’s a rundown of all of Gwen’s abilities.
Passive – Thousand Cuts
“Gwen’s basic attacks deal bonus on-hit magic damage based on a percentage of her enemies’ maximum health. Basic attacks against champions will heal her for some of the damage dealt.”
Q – Snip Snip!
“Gwen rapidly snips her scissors between two and six times, dealing magic damage in a cone. At a minimum, Gwen will snip twice, adding one snip per basic attack Gwen has landed on an enemy (up to four for a total of six).”
“Enemies in the center of each snip take true damage, as well as the bonus magic damage from Thousand Cuts.”
W – Hallowed Mist
“Gwen spins up the Hallowed Mist to surround her for five seconds, gaining some armor and magic resist when in it. Enemies outside the mist cannot target Gwen or hit her with any abilities. The mist will move to follow Gwen the first time she tries to leave it, but will dissipate the next time.”
E – Skip ‘n Slash
“Gwen dashes a short distance and empowers her attacks with increased range, speed, and on-hit magic damage for four seconds. Attacking an enemy during this time refunds 50% of the ability’s cooldown.”
R – Needlework
“Gwen can cast Needlework up to three times, but needs to hit an enemy within 8 seconds to unlock each subsequent cast. Each cast fires needles in a line that deal magic damage, slow enemies, and apply Gwen’s Thousand Cuts bonus magic damage.”
“The first cast will fire one needle, the second will fire three, and the final cast will fire five, for a total of nine needles and nine applications of Thousand Cuts to enemies hit.”
