‘Hannibal’ Creator Remaking Iconic Stephen King Film
In the pantheon of movies about inanimate objects coming to life and killing people, Stephen King’s Christine is one of the most iconic. The killer car got its own movie back in 1983 from legendary director John Carpenter. Despite not being one of his more memorable outings, Christine is still a well-regarded movie sitting at 69% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Christine has been forgotten with time but that won’t be the case for much longer. According to Deadline, Bryan Fuller will be writing and directing an adaptation of the story with Blumhouse producing. For those unfamiliar with Fuller, he’s got an excellent track record with Television.
He was the man behind the criminally underrated Hannibal on NBC a few years back, as well as many other projects. He’s most recently been one of the men in charge of Star Trek: Discovery. Fuller doesn’t have much movie experience outside of writing a couple of TV projects. He’s made his bones as one of the best writers working in TV. He also doesn’t have a single directorial effort in his resume. He hasn’t even directed an episode for any of the many shows he’s developed.
It’s interesting that he’d decide to get into directing and movies at the same time. Blumhouse has a track record of taking chances on unproven directors. They handed Jordan Peele his first directorial opportunity with Get Out, which was obviously a massive success for the studio. Fuller knows how to make compelling stories and this is a very interesting route for him to go. There’s not much in his back catalog that suggests he’d be the right guy for a Christine remake. However, it’s hard to imagine he doesn’t kill it. He’s been able to work with some top-notch directors throughout his years and he’s likely picked up some tricks along the way.
