James Wan Drops Cryptic Tease for ‘Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom’

Fresh off directing the upcoming horror movie Malignant for HBO Max, James Wan is heading back to the world of blockbuster superhero movies. His first Aquaman was a massive hit for Warner Bros. so he was obviously tapped to make a sequel. Not much is known about the sequel other than the fact that it’s titled Aquaman and the Lost KingdomHowever, Wan has been giving little hints via his Instagram page.

On Monday, he revealed a photo from the first day of filming for the highly anticipated film showing an icy set with a clapper that has the title NECRUS on it.

Big budget films typically have dummy names so that it’s easier to keep some details under wraps. Based on the clapper showing that they were filming scene 2C, it’s likely that we’re getting some action in an icy setting early in the film. The first film featured a bit of globe-trotting so it’s fair to expect that from the sequel.

The most interesting thing about the film is actually the word Necrus. Necrus is one of the many lost underwater cities in the DC comics universe. With the film’s subtitle The Lost Kingdom likely referencing one of the seven kingdoms of Atlantis, this bit of information dropped by Wan could indicate that Necrus is the lost city that Aquaman will have to search for. As of now, that doesn’t mean much. Wan could be doing any number of things with Necrus. What does sounds interesting is that Necrus has no fixed location and can pop up anywhere in the sea. Wan can certainly have some fun with that concept.
