John Boyega Drops out of Netflix Film From Acclaimed Director
If you’re a fan of indie cinema, then you probably pumped up for Jeremy Saulnier’s new film titled Rebel Ridge. The acclaimed filmmaker behind Blue Ruin and Green Room had a bit of a dud with the underwhelming Hold the Dark, but Rebel Ridge sounds like the perfect movie to showcase what he does well. The plot is yet to be known but it’s said to be a movie featuring action, suspense and black humor, which are three things that Saulnier does extremely well.
However, the production has hit a major snag. John Boyega, who was set to star in the film, has been forced to leave the project to deal with a personal matter.
According to Deadline, a Netlfix spokesperson had this to say:
“Rebel Ridge is pausing temporarily as we look to re-cast John Boyega who needed to leave the project for family reasons. We remain committed to Jeremy Saulnier’s extraordinary film and look forward to resuming production. We look forward to continuing our partnership with John Boyega’s UpperRoom Productions, in addition to our upcoming film They Cloned Tyrone in which he also stars.”
Production on Rebel Ridge began a month ago so there’s no doubt that Boyega has filmed some scenes. The exact reasons he had to leave the project aren’t very specific but it must be serious for him to leave at this juncture. Hopefully, it doesn’t affect the final product too much as this was easily one of my most anticipated movies coming out.
