Sony Announces Disappointing ‘God of War 2’ Release Date News
It looks like we’ll have to wait a little longer before we’re able to return to Midgard. Sony has announced that the highly-anticipated sequel to 2018’s God of War has been delayed until 2022.
Hermen Hulst, the current head of PlayStation Studios, announced the delay during a Q&A on PlayStation.Blog in which he discussed what’s in store for the studio.
Thankfully, Horizon Forbidden West is still set to release during this holiday season, but God of War‘s development started “a little later,” so the decision to delay it was made to give Santa Monica Studio ample time to deliver the best experience. The decision is understandable, and Hulst said that they wouldn’t sacrifice “the quality of [their] titles” or the “health or the wellbeing of [their] amazing team” in order to meet release deadlines.
“So we have, currently, two very big, very narrative-driven games in development: Horizon Forbidden West and the next God of War. And for both of those, they’re frankly affected by access to performance capture and talent. For Horizon, we think we are on track to release this holiday season. But that isn’t quite certain yet, and we’re working as hard as we can to confirm that to you as soon as we can,” Hulst said.
Hulst also spoke about how important it was for PlayStation Studios to factor in the PS4. “You can’t build a community of over 110 million PS4 owners and then just walk away from it, right? I think that’d be bad news for fans of PS4, and frankly not very good business. Where it makes sense to develop a title for both PS4 and PS5–for Horizon Forbidden West, the next God of War, GT7–we’ll continue looking at that. And if PS4 owners want to play that game, then they can.”
While it looks like PS4 owners will still be receiving choice titles for the system, PlayStation Studios will remain focused on exclusive “showpieces” for the PS5.
While we’re bummed to see God of War 2 delayed until 2022, we’re excited to hopefully receive Horizon Forbidden West this holiday season. Santa Monica Studio impressed critics and players alike with 2018’s God of War, and there’s no doubt that they’ll be able to deliver an experience worthy of the hype.
